Dentist in Buffalo Grove Restores Health with Root Canals

January 10, 2017

Root canal therapy from dentist in Buffalo Grove, Dr. Natalya Nagornaya, heals failing teeth. Read the backstory of this tried and true restoration.

All dentists want to preserve as much natural tooth structure as possible. For ailing teeth, a viable alternative to extraction is root canal therapy, or endodontics, from your dentist in Buffalo Grove, Dr. Natalya Nagornaya. Comfortable and requiring only two visits to Countryside Dental, root canal therapy restores problem teeth, relieves pain and gives years of additional service to the patient.

Reasons for Root Canal Treatment in Buffalo Grove

When a patient comes to Countryside Dental with a swollen jaw, reddened gums, bad breath or drainage and throbbing pain, Dr. Nagornaya determines if the tooth may be restored or if it must be extracted. Many times, she avoids pulling the tooth by performing root canal, or endodontic, therapy.

Often wrongfully labeled as painful, arduous and costly, endodontic therapy is really comfortable,  short and less expensive than extraction paired with a dental implant or other prosthetic. Plus, a patient’s natural teeth serve him or her best as years go by, retaining a more youthful appearance and proper oral function.

To decide on the right treatment for the tooth, the dentist inspects it and takes digital x-rays. Upon confirming fracture, infection or other issue in the interior of the tooth, Dr. Nagornaya can begin root canal therapy. She often uses nothing more than local anesthesia (pain shot) to numb the area.

The Root Canal Procedure

When the site is numb, Dr. Nagornaya places a rubber dam around the tooth so it stays dry and free from debris during the procedure. She drills a small hole in the first of up to four root canals, or inner tooth chambers. Each chamber contains blood vessels, connective tissue and nerves critical to the tooth’s development. Fortunately, the adult tooth functions well without this soft tissue after root canal therapy.

After accessing the canal, the dentist uses several tiny files to remove the infected pulp. She smoothes the canal walls and instills antibiotics to treat the infection. As needed, she performs the same process on the remaining root canals.

Then, the dentist fills the canals with a biocompatible putty called gutta-percha. This natural material seals and strengthens the tooth. The dentist places a temporary filling over the tooth to protect it while it heals.  After about a week, the patient returns to Countryside Dental for placement of an all-ceramic dental crown.

The Benefits of Root Canal Therapy

Endodontic therapy preserves the natural tooth and strengthens it for years of added service.  Tooth extraction, especially without replacement, is always a last resort. Natural teeth preserve a youthful facial appearance and facilitate biting, chewing and speaking. Additionally, real teeth protect jawbone integrity and the strength and alignment of adjacent teeth in ways no dental prosthetic can.
