How Can Apple Cider Vinegar Affect Your Teeth?

Over the past several years, apple cider vinegar has become a popular home remedy. It’s been used in medicine as it’s believed to help with a wide range of health issues, like blood sugar and cholesterol. A few people might even use it to whiten their teeth! That said, while it may benefit your overall well-being, be wary of how it can harm your smile. Here’s what to know and tips to avoid trouble.

What Can Apple Cider Vinegar Do to My Smile?

As you likely already know, apple cider vinegar is very acidic. That’s due to the fermentation process, but it can weaken your enamel the longer it comes into contact with it. This outer layer of your teeth may become softer, leaving them vulnerable to chips and cracks.

Not only that, but as it gets worn away, the dentin underneath will become exposed. Tooth sensitivity can occur, and it’s often triggered when you eat anything hot or cold. This is also a sign that a cavity is forming, as bacteria in your mouth will be able to attack the inner structures more easily.

The reason this is trouble is because your enamel can’t grow back. It’s not like your bones or fingernails, so you may be dealing with the discomfort until it gets remineralized.

How Can I Use Apple Cider Vinegar More Safely?

Although apple cider vinegar can be trouble for your smile, you may not want to give up its health benefits. Thankfully, you don’t have to stop using it flat out. Instead, you can make some small changes to reduce your risk of any problems. These are a few things you can add to your routine:

  • If you drink it, then do so through a straw. This will limit direct contact with your teeth, so erosion isn’t as likely.
  • Drink water right after consuming apple cider vinegar. You’ll be able to rinse out lingering particles and neutralize acids left behind.
  • Brush your teeth 30 minutes after having it. Doing so right after can lead to additional wear and scratches. When you do, use a soft-bristle toothbrush and fluoride toothpaste to remineralize your enamel.

The three tips above are great to do at home, but don’t forget about your dentist. They will be able to ensure your smile stays in great shape and offer treatments to make sure it stays strong. If you use apple cider vinegar to whiten your grin, then they also have you covered with a professional service. By heading to them, you can get the results you want without sacrificing your oral health.
